Professor, Leader of Microbial Process Engineering Group, Associate director of Key Laboratory of Biofuels, Associate editor of Marine Science
Dr. Professor LIU Tianzhong obtained his PhD degree in 1998 in the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He has been devoted to developing original work on microalgae biotechnology including screens of engineering microalgae, heterotrophic modification, photobioreactor design, fermentation, construction of microalgae bioprocess and process simulation, serving to CO2 fixation and applications in fuel, food, feeds and fertilizer. Professor LIU first noticed the filamentous oleaginous microalgae Tribonema sp, and proposed the concept of filamentous engineering microalgae. He also developed the microalgae biofilm attached cultivation technology with advantages in high biomass productivity and water saving. He constructed a technology of palmitoleic acid (C16:1,ω-7) production with heterotrophic fermentation of Tribonema sp, or Saccharomyces cerevisiae. He has published more than 90 papers and granted more than 30 patents.
